WVCADV began in the late 1970's as a grassroots group of domestic violence programs working together to end family violence in West Virginia. In 1981, the network incorporated as thirteen shelters serving the state. By 1988, WVCADV had developed a clear mission statement, principles of unity, a statewide service plan, and the need for a central office to focus on violence prevention through education, training and technical assistance to programs, public awareness, and public policy. In October 1988, a central office was established with two Team Coordinators. Since then outreach services have grown to include all but ten of the state's 55 counties. The central office currently has nine staff and is located in Big Chimney near Charleston. We work though direct services and systemic change actions in the belief that peace in the world begins in the home.
