Happy Tails was founded in 1993 by volunteers committed to helping homeless and abused animals that have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves. In addition to their long-term goal to obtain their own facility, Happy Tails volunteers are actively pursuing several secondary, but no less important, goals: (1) providing temporary foster care for homeless and abandoned animals before placing them in safe, caring, forever homes; (2) providing continuing care for animals that cannot be placed in homes; (3) establishing an active spaying/neutering program to control overpopulation by breaking the rampant reproductive cycle in these animals; (4) helping seniors and other needy persons to obtain veterinary care for their animals; and (5) promoting education in the humane and caring treatment of animals. Our success in achieving our goals depends upon the availability of volunteers and the financial support of generous donors. Happy Tails is an entirely volunteer organization. No one receives a salary or any other form of remuneration. Happy Tails opened the first no-kill, cageless, cat-adoption center in the Sacramento metropolitan area in November, 2000. This innovative adoption center allows prospective adopters and other animal lovers to interact with cats and kittens who are not kept in cages, but rather are free to explore and live in a cageless center. The cats have climbing posts, cat walks, comfortable beds, and a natural setting where adopters can see a cat's true personality.
