Caregiver Emergency Respite Fund's (CERF) programs are designed to reduce the physical, emotional, and economic toll caregiving places on family caregivers enabling them to regain balance between family, caregiving and work. Today there are 52 million caregivers in America. A caregiver is anyone who provides regular assistance to another person who is ill, has a disability or needs help in the daily tasks of life. They are our neighbors, eighteen-year-old students, mothers with two children, full time employees and senior citizens. Everyday 25,000 more Americans voluntarily take on the role of caregiver. Caregivers experience a higher rate of mortality, depression, chronic health conditions, and economic hardship as compared to their non-care giving peers. The unfortunate reality is many of these caregivers either do not have the means to afford full time assistance (25% have household incomes below $20,000) or the ability to travel to metropolitan centers to connect with counselors and support groups. Over the next 10 years, as the "baby boom generation" reaches peak health services needs, this segment of our population is expected to increase 180%. CERF's goal is to provide free caregiver assistance to family caregivers in every community in the United States.
