Good Samaritan Ministries is a non-profit, ecumenical organization of people helping people founded in 1985. Relying on donations, Good Samaritan Ministries believes that our community can find resources of time, money, goods, and volunteer services. Recognizing the dignity and importance of each person, the Good Samaritan staff works with each individual on long-term solutions. In terms of financial aid, Good Samaritan Ministries helps provide funds for rent, utilities, prescriptions, and other basic needs. We have a food pantry in which food is provided as needed. Another aspect of our ministry is The Shepherd's Lunch, which provides a hot noontime meal to the homeless, low-income, and elderly. The Shepherd's Lunch is housed at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and is directly across from a former hotel that now houses disabled and low-income individuals. When the program was started we did not know how many lives would be impacted by the program being located in the current facility.

Homework Hotline Inc

website: http://www.homeworkhotline.info

Tennessee students are dropping out at intolerably high rates. Forty-five percent of our children drop out of school. That puts Tennessee in the bottom five in the nation. Not completing high school is costly to the student and to the community. Nearly 75% of those incarcerated in correctional facilities, and the vast majority of those who receive aid from Families First or live below the federal poverty line, are high school drop-outs or left school before ninth grade. Academic success is vital from the earliest grades. It is the key to graduation. Students who are behind in elementary school rarely catch up. Academic failure is the greatest statistical factor in determining why children leave school. It affects more children then drugs, pregnancy, and violence combined. According to national studies, children who are economically disadvantaged or are English Language Learners (ELL) and do not get additional help are at high risk for academic failure, dropping out of school, and being pushed into GED programs. For ELL students, the dropout rate is dire. Tennessee Department of Education experts bemoan that the majority of current Tennessee ELL students can not graduate because they do not have the skills needed to pass exit exams. Homework Hotline provides: * After-school assistance from specialists in reading, math, science, and other subjects * Bilingual instruction in Spanish, Kurdish, Somalian, and Arabic * Professional development in ELL methodologies for all Hotline staff and interested volunteers.

Legal Aid Society Of Middle Tennessee And The Cumberlands     (615)244-6610
300 Deaderick St Nashville, TN 37201
website: http://www.las.org

Legal Aid Society's mission is to enforce, advance and defend the legal rights of low-income and vulnerable families in order to obtain for them the basic necessities of life. America was founded on the concept of equal justice for everyone..... it is confirmed in our pledge of allegiance and it is written above the doors of many courthouses, including the Supreme Court. However, there is a gap in our system. In civil cases, people who cannot afford legal representation usually must struggle alone against complicated government programs, individuals and entities in a position of power who are taking advantage of them, and violent family members. Legal Aid Society strives to fill that gap, helping to preserve that precious, cornerstone American value of justice for all. The need is tremendous. There are approximately 300,000 low-income people in our service area who are eligible for help, each experiencing an average of one civil legal problem every year. We receive over 60,000 requests for assistance each year. Due to limited resources, we are only able to open about one case for every 10 requests.
