Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)  Hours : M - F 8:30am to 5pm What is the purpose of this service? The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides temporary financial assistance for pregnant women and families with one or more dependent children. TANF provides financial assistance to help pay for food, shelter, utilities, and expenses other than medical. Who can receive these services? To qualify for TANF, a person must: Be pregnant or have a child under age 19 who lives with them. A child who is 18 must be a full-time high school student. A pregnant woman (and her husband, if he lives with her) may qualify for help, even if they don't have any other children. Live in Illinois. You can be homeless and still qualify. Be a U.S. citizen or meet certain immigration requirements. Develop a plan for becoming self-sufficient and follow it. What services are offered? Time-limited cash assistance for basic needs, such as food, clothing, housing, etc. Transitional services to help families become independent, such as GED preparation, vocational training, postsecondary education, vocational rehabilitation, classes in basic English, help with child care, work stipends, job retention services, etc. Screening for issues related to substance abuse, mental health, and domestic violence, and referrals for available services to address them. A person who gets TANF may also get medical assistance and SNAP benefits. HFS Medical Assistance Programs  - DHS provides medical assistance on behalf of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (DHFS), which administers the program. A family who receives TANF also receives a MediPlan Card that covers most medical needs. SNAP (formerly food stamps )  -  If a family who receives TANF qualifies, DHS also provides them SNAP benefits. A person may apply for TANF online or at a local office that serves the area where they live. Use the  DHS Office Locator  to help find the nearest Family Community Reource Center. A person who applies and is determined eligible for benefits receives their cash and SNAP benefits through  Illinois Link Benefits . TANF Temporary Assistance for Needy Families - DHS 586 TANF Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Spanish) - DHS 586s TANF customers may qualify for assistance to help pay for installation of telephone service and monthly charges for local phone service through the  Lifeline and Link-Up Telephone Assistance Programs . TANF customers may qualify for assistance with utility bills or home weatherization through the  LIHEAP and Weatherization programs .

    I HAVE A CHANGED INCOME NOW FOR A LONG TIME, AND I EXPECT THIS LOW INCOME TO CONTINUE. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE MY SNAP AND MEDICAID BENEFITS FOR ME AND MY WIFE REVIEWED. ALTHOUGH, I GET MEDICARE, MY WIFE IS IN DIRE NEED OF MEDCAID WHICH SHE IS NOT GETTING NOW. iF NEED MORE INFORMATION FROM ME, PL. GIVE ME AN APPOINTMENT FOR INTERVIEW OR WHAT PAPERS SHOULD I SEND IN BY MAIL TO VALIDATE MY REQUEST. IAM A RECEPIENT OF SNAP, BUT NEED REVIEWED AND WAND MEDCAID FOR MY WIFE.     I have reapplied for food stamps i sent in my paper work for it and no one contacted me. I had a job, I was let go due to losing my voice. I have been on interviews i have done jobs through temp agency to put money together to pay my rent.
