The Center for Hearing and Speech teaches hearing-impaired children to communicate by speaking instead of using sign language. The Center is the only school in Houston to use this method and is one of only two in Texas. Founded in 1947 as the Houston School for Deaf Children, the Center changed its name in 1994 to reflect its broadened services for children with speech problems. Since its opening, the Center has provided intensive low-cost education, audiology, and speech pathology services to thousands of children and has offered community hearing health education to thousands more.

“The mission of The Center for Hearing and Speech is to enable children with hearing loss to reach their full potential by teaching them listening, speaking and literacy skills.”
