The African Services Committee is a twenty year-old 501(c)3 community-based organization established by Ethiopian refugees in 1981 to provide comprehensive resettlement assistance to African refugee arrivals. In 1990, African Services Committee expanded its mission to provide health, social, and legal services to all African immigrants, refugees, political asylees, and undocumented persons settling in NYC. Our programs work to increase the self-sufficiency of recent African arrivals, who have come to New York City seeking relief from political oppression, poverty, war, famine, and disease. Predominant origin of staff and targeted communities are the Sub-Saharan African countries of Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Guinea, Mauritania, Zaire, and Zimbabwe. Smaller East African communities served are Kenyan, Ugandan, Sudanese, and Somali. The agency also serves French and English-speaking Caribbean clients.

“Expanding HIV prevention and access to AIDS treatment and care is central to our mission. African Services has taken this work from Harlem to the frontlines of the global pandemic and now operates three health and community development centers in Ethiopia. We are committed to challenging stigma and discrimination at all levels and supporting individuals, families and communities most impacted by AIDS. Combined with life-saving treatment, this care and support has transformed thousands of lives.”
