Foodbank Of Southern California     (562)435-3577
1444 San Francisco Ave Long Beach, CA 90813
website: http://www.foodbankofsocal.org

The Foodbank's mission is to provide highly nutritious food to the community's hungry citizens and to ensure that no individual go hungry, not even for a single day. 68% percent of the food recipients are hungry children, 19% are hungry seniors, and 13% to hungry adults. The Foodbank has been providing food to impoverished children, families, and seniors residing in Los Angeles County since 1975, with a dominate focus on the poorest of the poor neighborhoods including downtown Los Angeles, Compton, San Pedro, South Central, Watts, and North Long Beach. The Foodbank solicits wholesome donations of nutritious food from the food industry and channels these products to charitable community organizations supporting low income individuals. The Foodbank of Southern California is a principal front end food provider to hundreds of community-based agencies who feed the hungry children, families and seniors. The Foodbank aids community-based organizations who are independently be unable to handle the logistics of transportation, space and refrigeration. The Foodbank's network receives food for emergency and non-emergency food programs such as shelters for abused children and women, crises centers, day care centers for children and seniors, senior centers, emergency box programs, soup kitchens, and food pantries. The agency is a vital link in the continuum of care that facilitates the needs of low-income people in our community. There are over 700 community-based agencies in The Foodbank's network. The small agencies may each feed 20 to 50 people, 5 days a week, while the larger agencies may each feed up to 1,500 people, 1 to 5 days each week. Hunger exists in every corner of Los Angeles County, exacting a physical, psychological, social and economic to afflicted children, families, and seniors. Unfortunately, the demand for emergency food assistance in Los Angeles County has increased every year during The Foodbank's 35-year history. Despite the growth in provision of services, as a feeding agency, The Foodbank is faced with providing increased service delivery to more people than was ever anticipated. Meanwhile, there is a continuous decrease in the already limited government support to transport and distribute food to our disadvantaged constituency. Impoverished families typically have enough money for only one week worth of food for the entire month. A U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics study found that an average American family spends 13 percent of their income on food. For a family of five, with an income of $22,000, after taxes, this would leave them with $178 for their monthly food budget. That's just a little more than a dollar a day per person. In contrast, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's most conservative suggested food budget, The Thrifty Food Plan, proposes that a family of this size should be spending at least $149 a week on food. The Living Wage project, based out of Penn State University, believes that number should be even higher. According to their formula, a family of this size should have a weekly food budget of $172.

Bet Tzedek, The House of Justice, provides free legal assistance to thousands of people who would otherwise be denied access to the legal system underpinning our democracy.Bet Tzedek was founded in 1974 by a few individuals who sought to act upon a central tenet of Jewish law and tradition, which appears in the Bible: Tzedek, tzedek tirdof -- Justice, justice you shall pursue. This doctrine decrees that it is the duty of all men and women to advocate the just causes of the poor and helpless.Although Bet Tzedek remains intent on assuring that the legal needs of the Jewish poor are met, we recognize that it is our duty to serve the entire community. For this reason, Bet Tzedek has always provided assistance to all eligible needy residents of Los Angeles County, regardless of their racial, religious or ethnic background.Indeed, at The House of Justice, we believe that all of the groups in our wonderfully diverse society are strengthened when bridges are built that bring us together in a common, just cause. For the people who are Bet Tzedek -- the lawyers and non-lawyers, staff members and volunteers, contributors and clients -- our mission, therefore, is to pursue equal justice for all.

People Assisting The Homeless
340 North Madison Ave Los Angeles, CA 90004
website: http://www.epath.org

PATH was founded in 1984 by a community collaborative of churches, synagogues, businesses, and concerned citizens who came together to address the growing problem of homelessness in Los Angeles. The group became incorporated as a non-profit organization with the mission ?to break the cycle of homelessness by empowering people with the tools for self-sufficiency. Our approach is to help people find work, save money, secure housing, and empower their lives. Based on the belief that the homeless need a hand up, not a hand out, PATH's programs respond to the immediate food and shelter needs of homeless people, as well as their long-term needs for financial security and stable housing. We are revolutionizing the way communities approach homeless services through our Regional Homeless Center, which opened in 2002 and brings together 98 beds of transitional housing with our innovative PATHMall collaborative. Through the PATHMall, homeless individuals gain access to over 20 supportive services in one convenient location. The PATHMall has received national recognition from ABC World News Tonight, British Broadcasting Corporation and the 2003 Mutual of America Community Partnership Award for being an effective model for serving the homeless. Each year, we serve over 4,500 homeless men, women and children. More information on PATH can be found at www.epath.org.

We circumvent thousands of cats from ending up the shelter, from being poisoned or harmed. We save lives by educating and providing services that most other animal welfare organizations do not.

The world looks to Los Angeles, a.k.a Hollywood, as a place where dreams come true. As reported by the LA Times, Los Angeles added 65,000 people last year, many of them hoping to break into the entertainment industry. And yet countless of these new arrivals come to Los Angeles unprepared for the challenges of urban life and succumb to its pressures in potentially devastating ways. Some end up living on the streets, some fall into drugs or prostitution. Many leave Los Angeles broken-hearted and in financial ruin. It is in the best interest of both the city and these young people to see that they get off to a safe start.

Bay Area Legal Aid
405 14th St Oakland, CA 94612
website: http://www.baylegal.org

Over 1.2 million residents* of the San Francisco Bay Area are living in poverty, and all of them are at risk for a number of destabilizing factors that plague the working poor. These individuals and families are at high risk for lack of sufficient resources to meet basic needs like food, clothing and utilities; unfair treatment and discrimination by landlords; and lack of access to health care. For this vulnerable population, an unwarranted eviction notice, the presence of domestic violence, wrongful termination of healthcare benefits or difficulty in overcoming barriers to employment can have devastating results. Families may lose or be denied housing, employment or vital medical treatment. In the long run, the constant stress caused by these types of chronic problems can lead to family dysfunction and breakdown. There are often simple legal solutions to these kinds of problems, allowing these vulnerable residents to begin to move out of these desperate conditions. However, the many burdens of a life of poverty make it extremely difficult, if not impossible in some instances, for a family to focus on a potential legal problem in order to see if it can be resolved. In many cases, low-income families are not even aware of their legal rights. Recent studies demonstrate the difficulty low-income residents face when trying to access legal assistance - a 2002 report by the California Commission on Access to Justice stated that 72% of all low-income Californians do not have access to a lawyer when facing a serious legal issue; and on average low-income households experience at least one civil legal need per year (Legal Services Corporation).BayLegal is committed to providing equal access to the justice system and high quality legal assistance regardless of a client's location, language or disability. Access to quality legal assistance and advocacy is crucial for these individuals to understand and assert their rights to create stability for themselves and their families. Without free civil legal services such as BayLegal's, these members of our community have no recourse when their basic rights are violated or not being exercised. *Residents living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Food insecurity and hunger touches more than 94,000 (nearly one-fifth) Sonoma County residents including an estimated 25,000 children and over 11,000 seniors. The high cost of living (27% above the national average) is a major factor leading to food insecurity. Too many working families at the low end of the wage scale are forced to make tough choices between shelter, health care and adequate food. Disabled individuals living on SSI are chronically in need of food, many seniors require emergency food assistance even with the benefits of Social Security, and there are alarmingly high rates of iron deficiency anemia in very young children in low income neighborhoods of Sonoma County. With the cost of housing, transportation, medical coverage, and utilities continuing to rise much faster than wage rates, food insecurity and hunger are also increasing for low-income people in our area. Of the 50,000 people the REFB provides food for each month: 37 percent of food recipients are children; 12 percent are seniors 48 percent of recipient households include children 39 percent of all households receiving food assistance are working families Over 20 percent of people served experience housing insecurity

It sprouts alliances with other websites and organizations spreading awareness and bringing forth valuable members and donors to each nonprofit cause. Out of the 784,000 nonprofit organizations in the United States, 80% have annual operating budgets of $25,000 or less making professional website design impossible. Those affording often rely on unprofessional efforts because they do not understand the importance, or feel comfortable in their knowledge to know how to begin. Though the technology of the Internet our organization located in the heart of Los Angeles reaches locally and across the country obtaining professional designers, volunteers and students to assist with the sites our staff designs and consults on. Our goal is to create as many nonprofit websites as possible and to be a resource of information to all, giving nonprofit organizations the confidence, access to affordable means with an accurate understanding of how this phenomenal and necessary medium generates awareness of their existence and purpose to all.
